What began 22 years ago, in the comfort of a family's home has grown to be one of Harford County's most sought-after and respected assisted living providers.
In 1987, Kenneth and Connie Skidmore opened their hearts and their Street, Maryland home to Connie's elderly grandfather, William McCaddon, who was unable to live alone. It wasn't long before Ken's grandfather, Blair Hart, needed special care and assistance."Miss Connie", as she is known to friends, found her time and attention being devoted to the role of "caregiver". As the community learned of Miss Connie's special care, other friends in the neighborhood,
Jim Heaps, Clara Patterson, and Fred Green also needed help. The Skidmore's welcomed them into their home, as well.By now, the children had given up their bedrooms for this growing "family". The Skidmore children helped with chores around the house...cleaning, laundry and cleaning the dishes. Heidi, the Skidmore's only daughter recalls, "A highlight each evening was when everyone gathered at the dinner table; we were all just one big, happy family!"
What began as a simple gesture of love and kindness began to grow.More families in the area heard about the Skidmore family and the special care they were giving .By 1991, Ken had left his construction job and, instead, devoted his full attention to building a new, larger home; a home not only for his family, but a home that would also accommodate the frail and elderly, who could no longer care for themselves. Additional staff was added to help the family provide round-the-clock care, and the reputation for exemplary service associated today with Hart Heritage Estates was well established.
In the mid 1990's, Mr. and Mrs. Skidmore constructed an addition to their Grier Nursery Road home to accommodate a total of 39 residents. With the acquisition of additional property in Forest Hill, Maryland in 2003, plans were set in motion to construct a state-of-the-art, 55 bed assisted living facility. In September, 2009, the beautiful Hart Heritage Estates of Forest Hill officially opened its doors.
Today, the Skidmore's continue to be actively involved in the day-to-day operations of both facilities, and remain Harford County's largest family-owned provider of assisted living services. Both Hart Heritage Estates of Street and Hart Heritage Estates of Forest Hill are licensed assisted living providers. We are recognized by the State of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Office of Health Care Quality.
